Several things must be considered in evaluating the quality or uplift resistance of adhered and induction welded membrane roofs. Membrane that is no longer adhered to the substrate can generally be visibly differentiated from the membrane that is still adhered. For example, a bulge, wrinkle, crease, or an uneven surface of the membrane is observed that is different from the appearance of the adhered membrane. These areas are usually rather easily discerned to someone with experience in inspection of roofs.
In other cases, the membrane can be poorly or marginally adhered, or even completely delaminated and not be so obvious. In such cases some consultants, manufacturers, and contractors have used the basic "plumber's helper" or "plumber's friend" to test the membrane. The plunger does not always get a good seal and frankly looks so out of place on a roof it should probably be left at the office in the restroom.
Adhesion Test Device
Canon Fabrications, LLC realized the need for a professional looking, functional, easy, and quick-to-use tool for spot testing the adhesion of adhered roofing products, and introduced the Canon Adhesion Test Device©, or ATD. With the twist of a T-handle, the ATD can be quickly adjusted for the pressure or resistance needed, and without tools. The ATD comes with a belt clip and stored in an attractive black heavy-duty Cordura© nylon zippered case with handles and shoulder strap that can be carried on board an aircraft. (It will never raise the eyebrows of a flight attendant or captain glaring at a "plumber's friend" on board!). The total weight of the ATD is only 28 ounces. A protective green snap-on cap protects the suction cup while not in use.
The Canon Adhesion Test Device© (ATD) is a professional approach to get an initial quick assessment of the adhesion of many adhered roofing systems including the induction welded roof system. This go-no-go test can be used to test large areas quickly and efficiently. Instructions and guidelines for use are included.
