Training & Certification
One of the most common complaints from some parties, with regards to the uplift test, is that tests were run improperly by persons not qualified or trained to conduct the tests. In some cases that is a valid point. The fact someone is an RRO, RRC, PE, RA, etc. does not assure they know how to run an uplift test. Likewise, the fact that someone has installed roofs or manufactured roofs all their career falls in the same category.
Canon recognized this and began offering the Certified Uplift Test Specialist (CUTS©) training in 2007 and has since certified well over one hundred individuals. This is an individual’s certification, not a company’s certification. The person running the test is the one who MUST understand it and comply with protocols!
ASTM has also recognized the need for training and certification of persons running uplift tests and is including that requirement in the new replacement standard.
Our training is a six-hour virtual seminar and covers the following subject matter:
Basic dynamics of wind and effect of wind on the roofing system (negative pressure and deflection).
Methods of determining base uplift pressures (e.g., using ASCE/SEI 7 and other sources).
Methods of determining target test pressures.
Comparison of differences between various basis-of-design protocols.
Basic concept of testing roofs for uplift resistance using negative pressure.
Procedures for conducting uplift testing.
Data collection for uplift testing.
Report preparation.
Differences in target pressures for assessing wind damage versus quality assurance testing.
Certification will be valid for a period of three (3) years from date of training. Renewal after that can be achieved on-line.
